Going Green With a Latex Mattress

If your current bed needs to be replaced and you're ready to go shopping for something new, then one of your preferred options might be a latex mattress. This is a type of foam mattress you would assume is made not from petrochemicals but from a more natural substance. In fact, that natural substance is the sap from rubber trees, which should make latex foam mattresses your most eco-friendly choice. But of course nothing is ever that simple. Latex has also been created synthetically, from petrochemicals, meaning that you need to do as much investigation with these mattresses as with any other product.

There are two processes used to create latex mattresses. With the Standard method, the liquid (whether it's the rubber sap or the petrochemical substance) is whipped into a froth, which creates the millions of air bubbles that are responsible for the special properties of a foam mattress. Then the liquid is poured into a mold, which is sealed and heated until it cures into its finished mattress form. In the Talalay method, the mold contains countless tiny pinprick spikes that make extra little channels for air to move through. This method creates a latex foam mattress that's somewhat more resilient and buoyant.

Natural latex apparently works fine with either the Standard or the Talalay method of creating a latex mattress. So the question then is why anyone would need to use the synthetic version of the material at all. One of the reasons is that natural latex isn't always as comfortable as the kind made from petrochemicals. Thus you find so many foam mattresses made entirely with synthetic latex. This demonstrates why you need to do your homework before you buy. A latex mattress can be made softer and more comfortable with the infusion of natural oils, so it's not true that you can't go all-natural. But even a mattress given a "green" label might contain synthetic latex. As you go mattress shopping, keep all these things in mind. Investigate the manufacturers and different brands if you can, to discover the process and the materials used. You want to be sure what you're getting when you buy a foam bed.

Latex Mattress - Why is it the Best Type of Mattress?

Are you considering a latex mattress for your next bed? If so, you are on the right track for finally purchasing a bed that will last for years to come. Latex may be a little higher priced than the standard metal spring beds that most consumers have slept on before, but they are also of a higher quality that provides a much better night of sleep and will last for years and years. Once you discover how it differs from other beds being sold right now, it is clear why many people consider it to be the absolute best mattress that can be bought today.

So how does it differ from the cheaper beds? For starters, the latex material that is used in the core is not habitable to dust mites, so you can rest assured that your bed is not going to become infested. Anyone who has had "bed bugs" before knows what a mess it creates, but you will not have to worry about that with latex bedding. This material is also hypo-allergenic and there are some models that also come with hypo-allergenic covers, making them ideal for those with severe allergies.

The consistency of a latex mattress is much like memory foam in that it conforms around the body for extreme comfort and support. The difference is that latex lasts longer while being just as comfortable as the foam mattresses. It is also cooler, since the process in which it is made allows air to be circulated much better than with foam mattresses. A good latex mattress will actually make you feel a little warmer during the cold months, and cooler during the hot seasons. There are two options when it comes to latex: natural or synthetic. Natural latex comes from the rubber tree and has a springy feel. The synthetic is made to completely mimic the natural substance, and there is very little difference between how they feel in the bedding. Synthetic is currently easier to find and a little cheaper than all natural latex.

One of the best natural latex mattress options is the Englander Nature's Finest mattress. Besides being environmentally friendly and completely hypo-allergenic, these mattresses reduce the pressure this often placed on certain body joints during sleep.

In the synthetic latex mattress market, the Sealy SpringFree mattress is one of the top picks. It offers just as much comfort and support, even with synthetic materials. Which latex mattress is best for you really depends on your individual needs. A little research is likely to prove that latex is the best way to go.
