Why Latex Mattresses Are Natural But Not Organic

Latex Mattress

When shopping for latex mattresses is can be easy to get confused between the terms natural and organic. Are they different terms? Are they interchangeable? Some merchants would rather keep you confused than explain it properly.

There is a difference between natural and organic. But it isn't a difference in quality; the issue is certification.

For any product to be labelled as "organic" it must have independent third party certification that proves it to be organic. At the moment the only materials that have that available are food and fabrics. There is no third party certification service for latex.

Because of that no manufacturer or merchant of latex mattresses can sell them as organic, even if they are. The best they can call them is a natural latex mattress.

Whether a latex mattress is natural or not is a question of whether the rubber comes from the rubber tree i.e. natural or whether it is synthetic rubber from a lab. Just because a latex mattress is "natural" doesn't mean it has only pure ingredients.

All latex mattresses have to have a small quantity of a bonding agent added to make the mattress hold its shape.

Low quality manufacturers may add other stabilizers and chemicals to their naturally harvested rubber. But premium mattress makers will only put in the bare essentials of additives - the bonding agent and nothing else.So Why Do I Still See Organic Latex Mattresses?

Even though the latex has to be referred to as natural. often merchants still refer to the mattress as a whole as organic. This can be confusing.

What they are doing here is calling their mattress an organic latex mattress made from natural latex. It is a subtle shift. The organic bit will refer to any organic wool padding or the organic cotton cover, not the latex in the core.

There is no need to be put off buying a latex mattress just because it doesn't have certification. I'm confident such a measure will be available in the future given latex's increasing popularity.

You can be assured that manufacturers of high quality organic/natural mattresses do not cut corners by adding extra chemicals and they fully disclose what goes into their mattress.
